BIOWAYS Barcamp during the “Open Day” event at the Campus of Food Science in Cesena, Italy

On the 12nd July 2018 a BIOWAYS barcamp was organized in Cesena (Italy) as a side event of the “Open Day” held at the Campus of Food Science of the University of Bologna (Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences). During the “Open Day” over 100 high school students were hosted and presented the BSc courses and programs related to Food Science and Technology and to Viticulture and Enology which are offered at the Campus. They also visited the laboratories and met researchers showing some practical research activities.

During this event UNIBO used the BIOWAYS training material to give students a short presentation to introduce the main concepts and ideas behind bioeconomy and present some examples of bio-based products currently used in every-day life, e.g. several items made of bioplastic, soaps and detergents having bio-based ingredients which were directly exhibited. Also the Bio Challenge game was played by participants who tested their level of knowledge thus increasing awareness on bioeconomy and bio-based products. Then students visited the laboratories of the Campus where researchers explained and showed some of the activities carried out related to the bioeconomy, e.g. use of microorganisms to produce bio-based compounds from food waste, recovery of bioactive molecules from agro-industrial by-products and their use as food ingredient for functional foods. Talks with researchers and demonstration of some lab experience was really successful since stimulated discussion and interest of students who could directly see and touch some of the products.
