BIOWAYS Barcamp at high school in Bologna, Italy

18 April

Bologna, Italy

On the 18th April 2018, the University of Bologna (Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences) organized a barchamp in the framework of the activities related to the “Earth and Climate Week 2018”. In addition to a seminar given to 45 high school students and 2 teachers under the theme “Circulating innovation: the pathway of bioeconomy”, which was arranged in collaboration with Tecnoscienza, also a barchamp was organized to raise students’ awareness on circular bioeconomy and bio-based products through showcase of several products made of bioplastics, recycled plastic, hemp and bamboo.

To better practice the basic concepts and potentials related to circular economy, a mini competition was then organized among small groups of students which were asked to think and propose an idea for a new bio-based product or related to circular economy, regardless it is feasible or not. The 3 following ideas were considered as the best ones: 1) “Bio-BIC”, i.e. a pen made of biodegradable plastic and bio-ink derived from cuttlefish; 2) “Sayonara”, i.e. building/insulating material derived from old truck tires; 3) “Bio-Pat”, i.e. use of potato peel to produce fibers and bio-energy.
